A Luxurious Stay At Lower Arthur’s Cottage, Greenfield, Saddleworth

by Paul Steele @baldhiker

A glorious house in a glorious place. Lower Arthur’s Cottage is situated in Greenfield, Saddleworth, Greater Manchester. A place I lived for many years and a joy to return to. This accommodation was a dream to stay in and even more so if staying with friends or large family. A luxurious place to get together and share a lovely time away together.

The name may say cottage but this expertly converted grade II listed mill house is laid out on 3 floors to a standard where every detail has been thought through and presented immaculately. 5 star standards all the way throughout.

Lower Arthur’s Cottage is part of Secret Houses, Boutique Holiday Accommodation and it is very difficult to know where to begin when describing the place there is so much detail and luxuriousness.

Sleeping up to 7 people it is perfect for a get-together away with friends or family. Plus a perfect base for Saddleworth outdoor adventures. A huge bonus is that it is extremely dog friendly.

Bottom Floor

As you step inside you certainly get the wow factor. The clean and luxurious neutral Scandanavian decor is immediately evident to see.

Looking left you have a gorgeous and well presented kitchen. As you look closer you get to see the amount of luxury that has gone into it. For a start it has the most state of the art wine fridge I have ever seen!

The lovely dining table is large enough for all yet does not take up all the space.

I can guarantee also that on sunnier days you will be dining outside, more on that space soon.

There was a lovely welcome basket awaiting us on arrival. Some well presented and really fresh bread, eggs and milk to help us on our way after a long drive.

As you walk into the lounge you can hear it scream warmth and comfort. The sofas are big, low, soft and extremely comfortable plus a great cebtrepiece is the wood burning stove.

It is a wondrous room to relax in and has space for everybody. Though luxurious you really feel at home and comfortable which is a great vibe to have.

Also on the ground floor you have a utility room for the washing machine and dryer. Need a hat? There is a huge selection here along the coat hooks.

Time to take a look upstairs and the sleeping space for everyone.

First Floor Room

The first floor is effectvely a huge main bedroom all to itself. It feels like a whole mini apartment for 2. The quality of the decor you will see just keeps on coming all the way throughout as you go up.

The super-king sized bed has a wow factor as you enter with the light from outside creating a gorgeous effect.

As you walk through there is a wonderfully lit row of walk in wardrobes that light up as you open the doors. This then leads to a dressing area and large en suite bathroom.

The bathrooms throughout again are designed to an extremely high quality and attention to detail.

Second Floor

Heading up to the top floor you can clearly see and feel the architectural thought that has gone into creating this house into a great space for group accommodation.

The second main bedroom again is a double room with a super king size bed but then you also have a third bedroom area.

Firstly there is a single bed with a pull out bed from underneath it.

Then a lovely little flight of wooden stairs takes you up to a small mezzanine with yet another bed.

Both these top floor bedrooms make use of a lovely and spacious ‘Jack & Jill’ bathroom.

No matter where you get to sleep, each and every bed is made with handmade pocket sprung mattresses and 800 thread count bedding. A good night’s sleep is definitely found here.

Garden Area

Before you step into the house on arrival though you will be wowed by the garden area. It is an absolute delight.

I can assure you that when the weather is good you will want to spend a lot of time out here. A big dining table and chairs for a family dinner under the stars. Maybe make use of the gas BBQ on hand. Or a gathering around the gas fire-pit reminiscent of a love island scene.

There is also a hot tub so you can wind down and relax outdoors with a nice drink.

I did say the accommodation was dog friendly and for convenience there is a great dog wash in the garden to clean those muddy paws after a good Saddleworth walk.

Walks In The Area

Ah yes, local walks. Saddleworth, as I said is an area I know very well having lived here previously. I can guarantee there are walks for everyone to be found.

Within a short distance you will find Dove Stone Reservoir which is a great way to discover the outdoors in the area. From the walk around the reservoir or a walk up to the tops above it.

You could also go and take in the views and unique landscape on Pots and Pans which stands above the village you are staying in. Or maybe a canal walk into the bustling and delightful village of Uppermill. A lovely place to walk through and discover its museums, independent shops and cafes.

For those wanting a longer walk then you can Pennines and hills with a local walk from Marsden nearby.

Don’t forget also that you can catch the train from Greenfield Station and be in Manchester within half and hour.

Conclusion

The villages of Saddleworth are places I have been close to throughout my life. Never did I think I could walk into one of the old mill houses and discover such a place of luxury that felt such a comfortable place to stay. A place to stay that has so much for an outdoor enthusiast like me.

Lower Arthur’s Cottage has been developed with so much attention to detail, style, comfort and any potential want. It is so gorgeous yet has all your homely needs. Remarkable. Perfect for a quiet escape and perfect for a group or family escape.

I am really looking forward to more properties appearing, designed by Secret Houses.
